Puerto Vallarta is a resort city situated on Bahia de Banderas on the Pacific coast. Puerto Vallarta is the fifth largest city in the state of Jalisco with an approximate population of 178,000 people. The city was named after Ignacio Vallarta a former governor of the state of Jalisco.
For many people Puerto Vallarta is a "must go" destination to visit in Mexico because of its reputation for fun, party and modern infrastructure. Puerto Vallarta offers an array of natural sites to visit, with a wealth natural beauty and historical buildings, hundreds of restaurants, nightclubs, bars and a very active night life, with tons of places to shop and for every budget.
Puerto Vallarta was not a major touristic destination until the early 70’s when a number of factors resulted in the Mexican government’s interest to make it a major international resort destination.

Puerto Vallarta was once named "Friendliest City in the World" as the sign reads when you enter the city from Nayarit. Tourism makes up about half of the economic activities in the city according to local sources. High season for Puerto Vallarta starts late November through March around the time College March Break starts.
