Mazatlan is known as the Pearl of the Pacific, and having an impressive history as a major port during the colonial era in Mexico. Mazatlan was said to be navigated by Sir Francis Drake, and with the sizable port and endless miles of beaches, was one of Mexico's most popular vacation destinations for US and Canadian tourists.
Visitors must be sure to visit a tour of the port, go on a jungle excursion, or take a break at one of the many restaurants along the Olas Altas, the main beach.
Mazatlan is located on the Mexican Pacific Coast, and is north of Puerto Vallarta and 35 minutes by plane from Mexico City. Mazatlan hosts the Mazatlan International Carnival which is considered the third most important in the world, in comparison to those in Rio and in New Orleans. The main currency in Mazatlan is the Mexican Peso and the electricity is the same as the US and Canada.
