The construction of a larger airport built the 70’s, gave as a result much more tourism to the island. Scuba diving is still Cozumel’s main attractions, and this is due to the healthy coral reefs. The coral reefs are protected from open ocean naturally by the islands geography. In 1996 the Mexican government created a coral marine park and prohibited anyone from damaging or removing any marine life within the park.
In recent years, with the construction of deepwater pier, Cozumel has become a regular stop for ships, and cruises in the Caribbean region.
