Cancun vacation Travel tips: You need a valid passport, Canadians do not need a visa, other nationalities check with your local Mexican Consulate. A tourist card is needed but it is always included with your pre-packaged vacation. Spanish is the official language but english is spoken at most tourist sites, hotel receptions, and most major stores. The currency is the Mexican Peso but US dollars is preferred for cash transactions, most major credit cards are accepted, ATM machines are widely available, travellers cheques are easily accepted. Electricity is 110v. Bargaining is accepted at the local markets but usually not at bigger stores. The Hotel zone is on a 17 mile long island with bridges to the mainland at both ends and it is easy to get around using the local bus system and most bus drivers understand with the use of maps where you want to go. Pickpockets are a concern if the bus is crowded. Be sure to use the buddy system when you are out late, even in the restrooms because of concerns about theft. Most of the large hotels have filtered water systems but still drinking bottled water is recommended specially outside the resorts.
