Santo Domingo:
Santo Domingo is the capital city of the Dominican Republic and its largest city. The city population was estimated at 2.25 million people back in 2006. Santo Domingo is situated at the shores of the Caribbean Sea and found by Bartholomew Columbus in 1496, Santo Domingo came to be known as the 'getaway to the Caribbean'.

The city of Santo Domingo is the oldest European city in America. Santo Domingo was first named La Isabel and later renamed after Saint Dominic. The city was destroyed by a hurricane in1502, when it was rebuilt by its new governor Nicolas de Ovando the city had to be moved to a nearby site. The original layout of the city can still be seen in the Colonial Zone.

Santo Domingo is rich in history, culture and architecture. Famous landmarks in Santo Domingo include Calle El Conde, Puerta de La Misericordia, the Catedral Santa Maria La Menor, Alcaza de Colon all located in the Colonial Zone. Cultural landmarks include Plaza de la Cultura home to many of the city’s main cultural venues like Teatro Nacional and the Museum of Modern Art, and Palacio de Bellas Artes.

Santo Domingo's Las Americas International Airport is the larger of the two located in the outside of the city and handles over 2.5 million passengers annually, the other airport, La Isabela International Airport is not used as a major international airport, and instead it handles most of the domestic flights.
