Samana:
Santa Barbara de Samana or just Samana is located in the southern part of the Samana Peninsula. The city was founded in 1756 by the Spaniards coming from the Canaries. A significant number of black immigrants came to the city from the USA in 1825.
The city is an important vacation destination and the spot for whale-watching. Samana has a population of just over 50,000 people 51% men and 49% women according to a study back in 2002. The main economic activities of this city are tourism, agriculture and fishing.
Samana is for anyone looking to explore nature and an adventure; green mountains, turquoise waters, long beaches and lively little towns in between is what Samana is all about. Samana is also a romantic spot many of its hotels are perfect for honeymooners, plus been a good choice for experienced scuba divers. On top of all that Samana is perfect for whale-watching, many companies offer whale-watching tours.
The new Samana International Airport at El Catey opened its doors in 2006 making Samana more accessible to direct international travel. Getting around Samana can be done on foot, by motorcycle taxi, or the best way yet, by renting a 4x4 jeep.
The area has a number of beaches on the north side of the peninsula Playa Bonita, Playa Cozon, Las Terrenas, El Portillo and Playa Popy, on the south side, Playa Galeras, and Cayo Levantado.
