Merida is the capital city of the state of Yucatan. Merida is located in the northwest of the state in the Yucatan peninsula, with a population of 886,188 people. The city was founded in 1542 by Spaniard Francisco del Montejo. The city was built on the same site of the Mayan city of Tho, the centre of Mayan culture for hundreds of years.

Merida’s climate is hot and humid depending on the season. Average temperatures are in the 33C with the highest temperatures happening in May when it reaches 38C.

Merida is nicknamed the "White City" due to the color of its buildings and the use of white stone to make them. Today Merida is a cosmopolitan city with colonial architecture and rich cultural heritage.
