Chennai was the first British settlement in India; on the site of a fishing village back in 1639. The city remains a major gateway to the south until today. Chennai today is a manufacturing hub known as the "Detroit of the South"; this is where 90% of the top IT Indian companies operate.
Although a highly industrialized city, Chennai offers many attractions for its visitors, among them: Marina Beach, Parthasarathy Temple, the Basilica of San Thome, Luz Church built by the Portuguese, also built by the Portuguese Church of Our Lady of Expectations, there is also the Government Museum and National Gallery among other places to visit.
